Get a compliance certificate or acknowledgement notice

This page has information about how to apply for a compliance certificate or acknowledgement notice in relation to a pool safety barrier.

A compliance certificate confirms your pool safety barrier has been inspected by a pool safety adviser and meets the Modified Australian Standard.

An acknowledgement notice confirms that a self-declaration has been made by the owner of the property stating that a pool safety barrier is in place that meets the Community Safety Standard.

Read about pool fencing and barrier safety standards to find out which one you need. Different standards and certification requirements apply depending on:

  • if your pool was installed before or after 1 January 2003
  • the property has previously been sold, transferred or leased
  • the size of your property.

How to apply for a compliance certificate

To apply for a compliance certificate, you must follow these steps:

Step 1. Fill in an application for a compliance certificate

Step 2. Submit the form to the Pool Fencing Unit.

Step 3. Organise an inspection of your pool safety barrier by a pool safety adviser from the Pool Fencing Unit.

If your pool safety barrier meets the Modified Australian Standard, you will be sent a compliance certificate.

If not, you will be sent a written report. You will need to do some extra work to bring it up to standard before organising another inspection by a pool safety adviser.

Once your pool safety barrier has been brought up to standard and reinspected by a pool safety adviser, you will be sent a compliance certificate.

How to apply for an acknowledgement notice

To apply for an acknowledgement notice, you must follow these steps:

Step 1. Check the pool safety barrier meets the Community Safety Standard by reading the Community Safety Standard guidelines PDF (759.0 KB).

Step 2. Fill in a declaration of compliance form

Step 3. Submit the form to the Pool Fencing Unit.

If the declaration meets the requirements, you will receive an acknowledgement notice.
