Scientific name

Rachycentron canadum.

Where they live         

Cobia congregate mainly around in-shore reefs with a particular attraction to turbulent waters. 

They can be found from the surface to the bottom around inshore rock ledges, deep water wharves, offshore islands, inshore and offshore reefs and wrecks.

Size and age

Grows to 200cm and a weight of 68kg. Maximum reported age is 15 years.

Fishing tips

When fishing for Cobia use heavy tackle. 

Their natural diet includes crabs so try crab for baited lines or even cut up mullet. 

If using lures try plastic swimming eels or large colourful bucktail jigs and small plastic crabs, fish, and shrimp.
