The art centres, galleries and museums of the Katherine region all reflect the area's rich and diverse history and culture.

Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre

Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre is a cross-cultural centre that aims to celebrate, learn, create and share culture.

It supports Indigenous and non-Indigenous people gathering and sharing art and culture through all of the following:

  • visual arts exhibitions
  • music/theatre/dance performances
  • education programs
  • workshops
  • cultural celebrations
  • meeting and conference hire.

Merrepen Arts Centre

Merrepen Arts has around 20 artists working in a range of traditional and contemporary mediums in a custom designed art centre.

Merrepen Arts supports the annual Merrepen Arts Festival, where artist numbers can increase to 80. This is usually held on the first weekend of June.

Mimi Aboriginal Arts and Crafts

Mimi Aboriginal Arts and Crafts is Aboriginal-owned and not-for-profit.

Artists come from the surrounding Katherine area, a region of 380,000 square kilometres.

Top Didj Cultural Experience and Art Gallery

Top Didg Cultural Experience and Art Gallery is 7km from Katherine and 22km from Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge).

The art gallery has works by artists from the regions of Warlpiri, Arnhem Land, the Kimberley and the Central Western Desert.

The cultural experience will teach you about local Indigenous culture and any of the following:

  • how to make fire from sticks
  • test your skills at throwing a boomerang and spear
  • paint your own piece of Indigenous artwork after a tutorial in rarrk painting.

The Larrimah Museum is in the old railway yards behind the township of Larrimah. It shows the impact of World War II in the area.

National Trust Museum Pine Creek

Pine Creek is the only original mining town remaining in the Top End from the gold rush era of the 1870s.

This National Trust Museum building is the oldest surviving prefabricated structure in the NT.
