Get school support for your child

Students with a disability in the Northern Territory have a right to access a full and inclusive curriculum that meets individual needs.

The Student Wellbeing and Inclusion Programs and Services (SWIPS) provides wellbeing and inclusion services for students in all government schools.

This includes students with hearing, mobility and vision impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities.

These services are delivered by professionals including specialist teachers, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists and social workers.

Their expertise supports schools where wellbeing, behaviour and disability may affect students’ learning and access to education.

Types of support

SWIPS works with schools to help with:

  • autism spectrum
  • hearing
  • inclusion
  • psychology
  • vision
  • attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • physical disability
  • wellbeing and behaviour support
  • early childhood intervention
  • transition from school.

It also:

  • helps families and external services work together
  • teaches school staff more about wellbeing and inclusion strategies
  • provides individual support services where specialised expertise, assessment and referrals to external services are required
  • helps with critical incidents involving a school community.

How to access support

If you have concerns about your child’s learning or attendance, talk to your child’s teacher. They know how your child is doing at school.

With your consent, the school may request a service from SWIPS.

The most appropriate professional will be assigned to you. They will contact you to discuss your concerns around wellbeing, behaviour or disability affecting your child’s learning.

Specialist education settings

Your child may go to a:

  • mainstream school
  • specialist program - e.g. hearing units and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) programs
  • specialist centre attached to a mainstream school
  • specialist school and centres.
