On the 1 July 2008, the new Workplace Health and Safety Act and the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act commence. These two Acts replace the Work Health Act. The new Workplace Health and Safety Act extends coverage of occupational health and safety onto mine sites and mining activities. More

2008 Territory Day Fireworks

There are new legislative requirements for Territory Day Fireworks that affect the public, and the wholesale and retail industries. It is illegal to sell fireworks to persons under the age of 18 years. Possession of fireworks outside of Territory Day is an offence. Sale of fireworks to intoxicated persons is prohibited. More

Australian Forum of Explosives Regulators (AFER)

GIO Approved

NT WorkSafe has approved GIO General Limited to provide workers' compensation insurance to the Northern Territory market as of 30 June 2008. For more information contact Mr Opie Loi, Executive Manager National Underwriting GIO on 02 8121 0940. Four other companies already provide workers' compensation insurance in the Northern Territory. These are Allianz, CGU, QBE and TIO. More

First annual mesothelioma report released

The Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) has released the first annual mesothelioma report: Mesothelioma in Australia Incidence 1982 to 2004, Deaths 1997 to 2005, March 2008. This follows a unanimous agreement in May 2007 to improve the collection and dissemination of information on mesothelioma in Australia. Electrical Safety - New Wiring Rules

AS/NZS3000:2007

The new AS/NZS3000:2007 was released on 12 November 2007, replacing AS/NZS3000:2000. It will not become mandatory in the Northern Territory until 12 May 2008 giving time for all electrical workers and electrical contractors to become fully conversant with the standard. Compliance with the new standard is mandatory under the Electrical Reform Act of the Northern Territory. More
