Swimming at Ormiston Gorge
1. Swimming at Ormiston Gorge
The Ormiston Waterhole is a brilliant swimming spot. Along with Ellery Creek and Glen Helen it provides the best swimming in the West Macs. Swimmers should be aware that most water holes are extremely cold. Prolonged exposure, even during summer, can result in hypothermia. Beware of submerged logs and rocks and do not jump, dive or swing into the water.
A visit in the early morning or late afternoon can be rewarded by an abundance of wildlife. Waterbirds such as the Pacific Heron and the White-faced Heron are common visitors to this waterhole. They hunt small fish from the waterhole with their long, sharp beaks.
Black Swans and Pelicans will make a rare appearance after heavy rain in the region. These birds move in from the Australian coastline (1500kms away!) after Central Australia has had extensive, prolonged rainfall. They arrive to feed on the prolific fish that occupy the Ormiston Gorge.
