2. Fastest in the West!

You will need: A keen eye and a pair of binoculars (if you have them).

As you travel into Glen Helen you're sure to notice the stunning sandstone cliff face in front of you. Up, high on the cliffs lives an amazing bird. It's a bird of prey called a Peregrine Falcon. Peregrine Falcons are found throughout the World so they have obviously done well for themselves. They will sometimes even live high up on sky scrapers in large cities.

This falcon is particularly famous for being 'the fastest bird in the World' but it's only the fastest while in a free-fall, streamlined dive, not when its just flying straight. Therefore you can call it the 'fastest diving bird in the World' instead.

Why the need for speed? It's because it hunts other birds and not just the slow ones. It loves to ambush birds like Cockatiels and Budgies from above, as they zoom along the Finke River. You will see many small birds flying fast in Central Australia. That's because if they dally too long they are likely to be snatched up by a Peregrine screaming in from above.

Sit in the sand of the Finke River and examine the sandstone cliff in front of you. Can you spot the pair of Peregrine Falcons? They are usually around somewhere but you will need to be patient. If you spot them, grab your binoculars and try to focus in of these speedsters of the sky. You will need to be quick. In a dive, Peregrine Falcons have been clocked at doing up to 320 kilometres per hour! (that's 200mph for non-metric kids!).

What are the Peregrines up to? Are they hunting? Maybe they are nesting? Can you spot their nests on the sandstone cliff? Their nests are often spotted by looking for long, white marks - this is their poo! They don't want to mess up the nest so they just poo off the cliff! Watch them for as long as you like, its great fun.

Peregrines are also sometimes seen at Ormiston Gorge and Simpsons Gap. Just look up along high cliff faces!

Best of luck spotting this speedy falcon! Ranger Michael
