Activities for Kids at Serpentine Gorge
1. Possum Poo Hunt
What you will need: Just some small plastic bags and keen eyesight.
The Common Brushtail Possum is anything but common in Central Australia. There have only been about four people that have seen one in the past twenty years in the region! That's pretty rare! So chances are, you won't see the animal but you may be able to find their poo (animal poo are called 'scats' by wildlife scientists so use that name instead - its a whole lot more polite!).
You can do this activity at any location in the West Macs - you can even do it in the East MacDonnells as well - it doesn't really matter.
Grab a small plastic bag and start hunting under trees. Possums spend a lot of time in trees so their scats are more common underneath trees - especially around the base of the tree.
Good trees to look under are the Wild Fig trees. There are two large ones on either side of Simpsons Gap waterhole. Also search under Mulga shrubs - Mulga shrubs can be found on the left hand side of the Simpsons Gap car park and along the Ormiston Waterhole walk.
Search underneath the trees and shrubs. Examine the ground closely. They are not easy to spot because they are small and brown coloured and easily blend into the leaf litter.
Let a Ranger know if you come across possum scats. Remember to tell them where you found it.
Good luck! Ranger Michael
