Walking at Finke Gorge
1. Arankaia & Mpulungkinya Walks, Finke Gorge
In Palm Valley, the Arankaia Walk (2km, 1 hour) and the longer Mpulungkinya Walk (5km, 2 hours return) loop walks meander along a lush oasis of slender palms and return to the car park across the plateau. The loops can be walked in either direction. Remember to bring plenty of water, a hat and strong footwear. Both walks cover open ground with very little shade. The plant life is diverse and spectacular across the top of the sandstone plateau including scrambling Wild Fig trees.
There is a problem with young palms being destroyed by visitors who unknowingly step on tiny palm seedlings. The continual regeneration of the palms is necessary for the survival of this unique population. Be aware of where you are walking and keep to the marked tracks at all times.
The Red Cabbage Palm (Livistona mariae) is only found in Palm Valley and a few other small locations across the Park. It is listed as vulnerable and is one of our important threatened species, a survivor from our rainforest past.
