Picnic & Barbecue at Standley Chasm
1. Picnic at Standley Chasm (Angkerle)
Standley Chasm (Angkerle) is a special place for the local Aboriginal people. This is Aboriginal Land and is owned and operated by the local Aboriginal people. It has a entrance fee of $8 per adult, $7 per concession and $6.60 per student. Check their website for information but no visit to the West Macs is complete without visiting this remarkable place. The best time to visit is in the midday when the sun streams down through the tight chasm, changing the dull rock walls into a blaze of reds and oranges. It is also the busiest time so if you want to see wildlife its best in the early morning or late afternoons. Remember that Standley Chasm has opening hours from 8am to 6pm.
Standley Chasm (Angkerle) is the only easy location to access the mighty Chewings Ranges (without overnight walking along the Larapinta Trail). These ranges have most of the rare and threatened species of the West Macs and tend to hold moisture for longer compared to the other ranges of the West MacDonnells. The vulnerable Black-footed Rock-wallabies are often spotted on the walk up into the chasm, as well as the threatened MacDonell Ranges Cycad.
Standley Chasm has the Larapinta Trail running through the area so if you are after an amazing walking experience its always an option to walk part of the Larapinta Trail from this location. There is also a breathtaking walk constructed by local Aboriginal people that heads up behind the kiosk to a viewing area that overlooks the ranges and valley to the west.
