Walking at Simpsons Gap
2. Cassia Hill Walk, Simpsons Gap
This walk winds up a small, rocky hill that gives an excellent elevated view of the surrounding mountain ranges and Simpsons Gap off to the north. The walk abounds with a variety of local plants and a self guided walk sheet is available from a box near the start of the walk.
Cassia (or more recently renamed Sennas) are a common group of small shrubs in Central Australia. It is not until they flower in mid and late winter that you realise just how widespread they are throughout Central Australia. They can be easily identified by their large, open petalled, yellow flowers that usually dominate across the top of the shrub. The flowers are harvested by a variety of local insects, including the small native bee that builds small nests in the hollows of nearby River Red Gums.
