Serpentine Gorge is yet another stunning natural feature of the West Macs region. The area provides the opportunity for medium length walk alone the edge of a dry creekline. You finish your walk at an idyllic semi-permanent waterhole that attracts birdlife from miles around. There is a lookout walk that winds up a stone staircase that offers some of the best views in Central Australia as you look northwards into the winding gorge to the north.

Serpentine Gorge, West MacDonnell National Park
Serpentine Gorge is yet another stunning natural feature of the West Macs region. The area provides the opportunity for long or short walks through lovely River Red Gums and alongside idyllic semi-permanent water holes. There are lookouts and well marked trails offering some fantastic views of the types of landscape and geology that are so evocative of Central Australia.
Key features:
- The shady waterhole and gap
- The awe inspiring views from the top of the Lookout Walk and bird watching.
- In dry times the waterholes in the surrounding area dry up, leaving Serpentine Gorge waterhole the only remaining waterhole in a large area. Birds will move in from the surrounding countryside and can easily be observed by sitting quietly by the edge of the waterhole.
