About the Strategy
The Northern Territory Road Safety Strategy 2004 - 2010 is aimed at reducing the number, severity and cost of road crashes in the Northern Territory.
At the time of developing the Northern Territory Road Safety Strategy, the NT Road Safety Council was the principal independent advisory body to the Minister on road safety and representative of the community. The Road Safety Council identified key objectives in the Strategy to reduce the level of trauma on Territory roads.

The Strategy was launched by the NT Minister for Transport and Infrastructure on 7 April 2004.
The Strategy aims to achieve a 40% reduction on current road fatalities, consistent with targets set nationally.
The four key objectives designed to meet the challenge of reducing road trauma in the Northern Territory include:
Safer Road Network
Ensuring that the planning, design, construction, development, maintenance and management of the road network enhance and support good road safety principles and practices.
The Road Safety Branch will work with the Road Network Division of the Department of Planning and Infrastructure and local government authorities to improve the safety of our roads. This entails ensuring that roads are constructed and maintained in accordance with appropriate standards and guidelines; and facilitating and coordinating bids for road funding through programs such as the Australian Government Black Spot.
Safer Road Users
Enhancing and legislating education, driver training and enforcement programs, as well as improving and supporting marketing activities to promote and influence long term community behavioural change with respect to speeding, alcohol and other drugs, fatigue, seatbelts and vulnerable road users.
Ensuring adequate infrastructure to promote and enhance cycling as an alternative method of transportation and one which minimises the potential road safety risk.
The Road Safety Branch of the Department of Planning and Infrastructure develops and implements road safety education and awareness programs.
These programs are grouped into the following categories:
- General community road safety education
- School-based road safety education
- Indigenous road safety education
- Visitor road safety education
The programs are delivered in close partnership with NT Police in conjunction with enforcement campaigns.
The Road Safety Branch records crash data from Police reports, and provides statistical reports on a quarterly and annual basis. The Road Safety Branch also produce reports for organisations and individuals from this information.
Road safety funding is largely provided by the Territory Insurance Office from contributions to the Motor Accidents Compensation Scheme.
Safer Vehicles
Advocating and supporting new technological features in vehicles to enhance, maximise and maintain protection for both vehicle occupant(s) and other road users in the event of a serious crash.
The Road Safety Branch of the Department of Planning and Infrastructure participates in the national process to develop improved vehicle standards. The Road Safety Branch also contributed to a media monitoring service to encourage compliance by motor vehicle advertisers with the "Voluntary Code of Practice for Motor Vehicle Advertising".
Effective Emergency Response
Enhancing communication skills and access to crash sites, particularly in remote locations, to enable timely first aid and care to the critically injured during the golden hour post-crash.
The Road Safety Branch continues to seek ways to improve action and intervention at trauma sites.
