Driving with Road Trains Campaign

Unlike most other States and jurisdictions, the Territory relies heavily on triple road trains in excess of 115 tonnes as a major form of transport. Road trains are used extensively between southern capital cities, Darwin and other parts of the Territory.

Road trains continue to be an integral part of the Territory’s road transport network, even since the commencement of the railway from Alice Springs to Darwin. Therefore it is essential that road safety awareness continues to be a priority, particularly in relation to frequent road users such as caravaners, tourists, locals and Aboriginal communities.

The Road Safety Branch of the Department of Planning and Infrastructure in conjunction with Ausfuel/Directhaul has conducted regular awareness campaigns entitled “Driving with Road Trains” since June 2004.

The main focus of these campaigns is to educate the public on driving and sharing the road network with road trains including:

  • Safe driving practices (involving towing, overtaking, night driving,
    speed, cutting-in)
  • Driving in remote locations and fatigue
  • Road safety in Aboriginal communities (pedestrian safety)

A range of promotional materials such as radio advertisements, television commercials and pamphlets are used in conjunction with these campaigns.
