Our Role
Some of the major tasks performed are:

Safety accreditation of railways for the purpose of railway infrastructure ownership or rollingstock/train operation;

Audits and inspections aimed at safety compliance monitoring;

Monitoring of and/or participation in investigations of rail safety occurrences;

Registration of private sidings;

Collection and evaluation of occurrence reports;
-
Development of regulatory guidelines, rules and other documents;
-
Participation in development of legal documents related to rail safety;
-
Provision of specialist advice to the Minister, the senior management of the Department, and the rail industry;

Provision of advice to other internal and external clients on rail safety technical and regulatory matters;

Development of Quality Assurance System for the Unit in order to achieve ISO quality certification;

Extensive involvement in all areas of the national rail reform associated with or related to rail safety;

Close cooperation with interstate rail safety regulators, the rail industry - including Australasian Railway Association (ARA), Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and National Transport Commission (NTC).
