Rail safety accreditation
Every organisation that wants to own railway infrastructure and/or operate rolling stock in the Northern Territory must apply for a rail safety accreditation.
The accreditation is subject to meeting conditions stipulated by the Northern Territory Rail Safety Act 1998 (the "Act").
The foremost condition is that the applicant develops a comprehensive Rail Safety Management Plan (RSMP) to address the requirements of the Act and AS4292 series " Railway Safety Management". The scope and the level of detail must be appropriate for the scale and complexity of the intended operations.
The underlying principle is hazard identification and adequate risk management.
Organisations already accredited elsewhere in Australia can apply through the Regulator who issued their principal accreditation for its mutual recognition in Northern Territory.
Rail Safety Unit will provide the applicant with detailed information upon request.
NOTE: Private sidings only require a registration, not accreditation. Registration process is much simpler than accreditation.
