Stage 2 - Tiger Brennan Drive Extension
Overview
The Northern Territory Government, Department of Planning and Infrastructure, (DPI) will design and construct 7.5km of roadworks, to extend Tiger Brennan Drive from Berrimah Road to the Stuart Highway, including an overpass at Stuart Highway/Roystonea Avenue. Stage 2 will cost $89 million, including project delivery.
The Tiger Brennan Drive Extension project will utilise the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) delivery methodology to gain the benefits of a Design and Construct delivery method while minimising the intensive resources required in the tender process of a normal Design and Construct (D&C) delivery method.
Benefits likely to be achieved by the ECI delivery method include:
- The ability for the Contractor to bring their own experience to the project during the detailed design stage of the contract
- Synergies arising from participation of a high performance design and construction team working in cooperation with the Principal
- Better integration of specific construction methodologies into the design
- Provide greater flexibility and allocation of time for planning in the project
- Likelihood of earlier acquisition of critical construction materials
- Earlier dedication of construction resources to the project
- Negotiated apportionment of risk.
The request for tenders for the main contract were advertised on 22 May 2008 and closed on the 25 June 2008.
The first phase of the contract for the Tiger Brennan Drive Extension was awarded to Macmahon Contractors on 17 November 2008. Macmahon’s designers, SKM, have completed the preliminary design and early works such as service relocations and ordering of long lead items is ongoing. The main construction contract was awarded to Macmahon on 1 July 2009.
Construction of the project will run through until the end of the 2010 dry season.
