Given a reprieve...
11 April 2006
The Northern Territory Government and the Road Safety Council is committed to reducing trauma on our roads this Easter. Last year 55 people died on Territory Roads, more than half of them were not wearing seatbelts.
Last month, a 38 year old Territorian who was driving through Batchelor was lucky he did not become a 2006 statistic.
As he drove into Batchelor, he fell asleep. The sound of crushing gravel beneath his tyres woke him just seconds later. His car rolled four times and he vividly recalls his seatbelt holding him firmly in place.
He survived with just a cut to his head, and believes it was his seatbelt, not just luck, that saved his life. After the accident, he swayed between grief and euphoria:
“I was consumed with guilt; I realised I caused the accident, and that my death would have destroyed the people who love me. On the other hand, just breathing in and out is now a very rewarding experience.”

Legislation amendments for Commercial Passenger Vehicle Industry

The Northern Territory Government has recently amended the Commercial Passenger (Road Transport) and the Motor Vehicles Acts in an effort to improve the safety of the public using all commercial passenger vehicles including buses, taxis, mini buses, private hire cars and tourist vehicles.
The amendments will require people to be excluded from the commercial passenger vehicle industry if they have been convicted of a prescribed disqualifying offence (some sexual and serious assault offences), regardless of when or where the offence occurred. For further details contact the Commercial Passenger Vehicle unit of the Department of Planning and Infrastructure on 8924 7501.

Starlight Special transports New Year revellers
5 January 2006
The Department's Starlight Special New Year's Eve bus service again proved popular, with around 3700 passengers choosing to use it to travel to and from their celebrations.
Services ran from 7.00pm through to 7.00am on New Year's Day. Patrons were well behaved with no assistance required from either Police or security guards to solve any problems on the buses.
The Starlight Special Bus Service runs on New Year's Eve each year and encourages people to leave their cars at home and use free bus travel to and from celebrations. It's part of a broader road safety campaign over the Christmas period which also includes licensed premises participating in the Sober Bob initiative.
