About DTAL

Theory 1

The purpose of the Theory 1 session is to develop entry-level knowledge of the NT Road Rules and an understanding of Road and Safety Legislation and Duty of Care.

The session is a minimum of 6 hours duration and comprises of 17 essential topics and an assessment. The training provider must be a registered DTAL Theory Instructor.

  • Alcohol and Drugs

The assessment is a written multiple-choice test from a selection of pre-printed test booklets. An oral test for students with literacy difficulties is permitted if required.

On successful completion of the assessment, students are issued with a registered DTAL Logbook, containing a Certificate of Competency and Theory 2 Homework.

The Certificate of Competency – Theory 1 must be signed-off by the student and the Theory Instructor as confirmation that the student has successfully undertaken the DTAL Theory 1 Assessment.

The Theory 2 Homework sheet (word 48Kb) located at the rear of the logbook, must be attempted before attending the Theory 2 session, further into the Program.
