Logbook
The purpose of the DTAL logbook is to illustrate the minimum skills students must obtain to progress through the DTAL Program.
The DTAL logbook consists of 22 Competencies and two Progress Reviews. It also contains 12 subsidised lesson vouchers, a number of User Pays lesson vouchers and carbonated Certificates of Competency:
- Certificate of Competency - I (Learner’s Licence)
Accepted by MVR as evidence of completion of the Theory 1 assessment and as payment for a Learner Licence. - Certificate of Competency - II (Vehicle On-Road Test)
Recognised by MVR as evidence of completion of Theory 2 and accepted in lieu of payment for a Vehicle On-Road Test. - Certificate of Competency - III (Provisional Licence)
Recognised by MVR as evidence of completion of all components of the DTAL Program, including Theory 2 and Progress Review 2, and once the student successfully passes their Vehicle On-Road Test, accepted in lieu of payment for a Provisional Licence. - Certificate of Competency (Record Only)
Maintains a history of achievement for student records.
DTAL subsidised vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of issue, however, students have up to two years after the date of issue of their DTAL Logbook to obtain their Provisional Licence through the DTAL Program.
Competencies
22 competencies relating to practical driving techniques are detailed within the Logbook and have to be met in order to complete the minimum requirements of the DTAL Program. The practical instructor will assess the student against these competencies and sign each competency off as they are met. The number of lessons required to achieve the necessary competencies will vary between students.
After the first 12 competencies have been achieved, Progress Review 1 must be completed, followed by Progress Review 2 once all 22 competencies have been met.
Progress Reviews 1 and 2 are used to confirm that the student has learnt what is required by that stage. On successful completion of the Progress Review 1, the student may then enrol to attend the Theory 2 class.
Once the student has successfully completed the Progress Review 2, the instructor has determined that the student meets the minimum practical requirements to become a safe and proficient driver and that the student is ready for their VORT with the MVR.
Vouchers
The Logbook contains two types of vouchers: Subsidised Lesson Vouchers and User Pays Lesson Vouchers.
The Subsidised Lesson vouchers are valued at $40 each and are used towards the cost of one hour of driving tuition with a DTAL Driving Instructor. Students will need to pay the difference between the tuition fees and the voucher, usually between $10 and $25 per lesson. Currently, a maximum of two DTAL subsidised lesson vouchers may be used in any one-week period.
At the end of each one-hour practical DTAL lesson, the student must enter their details and lesson information on the voucher and endorse this information as true and correct. The instructor also needs to endorse the information, mark off any competencies achieved and enter comments.
There are three copies of each voucher. The original white copy is to be removed by the instructor to submit for payment from DET, the yellow copy is to be retained by the instructor for their records and the blue copy is to remain with the Logbook.
- Both the student and the instructor must initial any amendments made to information on the voucher, particularly changes to the instructor details and lesson dates or times.
- Vouchers must not be pre-signed by the student. Students should wait until all of the information has been attained and complete the voucher at the end of each one-hour lesson.
- The Logbook must remain with the student at all times.
- Logbook vouchers are currently valid for 12 months from date of issue.
The User Pays vouchers are used as an information tool for the instructor, Motor Vehicle Registry and the student. They highlight any further competencies achieved outside of the subsidised lessons. The original green copy is removed by the instructor for their records and the blue copy remains with the Logbook.
