About DTAL

Getting a Learner’s Licence

Students need to present the original (white) copy of the DTAL Certificate of Competency - I (Learner’s Licence) at a Motor Vehicle Registry Office (MVR), together with required identification evidence to obtain a Learner Licence. See the Department of Planning and Infrastructures; Evidence of Identity and Residency for Individuals - Documents Required, for a complete list of approved documents.

Students under 17 years of age will need a parent or guardian to attend or sign a statutory declaration giving permission to obtain a Learner’s Licence. Evidence of identity of the parent/guardian will also be required. The Learner’s Licence will be paid for by the Program.

Please note, students must present the approved Certificate of Competency - I to the MVR within 3 months of the date of issue, or it will expire. Should the Certificate of Competency expire, the student will have to successfully complete a theory test at the MVR, and then pay $18 for the issue of a Learner’s Licence.
