The Power and Water Corporation began works to extend the electricity network to the Dundee Beach area in February 2004. To date, around $6.3 million has been spent on this project – a combination of funding from the NT Government and the Power and Water Corporation.
Construction of the powerline reached the Dundee Lodge on 14 December 2005, and town power was officially turned on for the first time on Saturday 28 January 2006.
If no delays are incurred from bad weather, Power and Water anticipates that around 1000 customers in the Dundee Beach and Native Point areas will be able to connect to power by late 2006.
Connection to the Dundee Beach Electrical Distribution System is covered by the rules set out in the Power and Water Corporation’s Distribution System Extension Policy or DSEP.
Stage |
Length | Construction Information |
|---|---|---|
One to Six |
82km. Stretches from Tumbling Waters to the Fog Bay turn off and continues down Fog Bay Road. | These stages have been completed and were energised on 14 December 2005. |
Seven |
5km Native Point Subdivision, along Namarada Drive. |
This stage was completed and energised on 10 October 2006. |
Eight |
8km Dundee Beach area. |
This stage was completed and energised on 10 October 2006. |
Nine |
5km This is the start of the project, and extends from the McMinns Zone substation near the Arnhem Highway, along the Stuart Highway to Jenkins Road. |
This stage has been completed. |
Ten |
8km Runs parallel to the Stuart highway, and extends from Jenkins Road to the Cox Peninsula Road. |
This stage has been completed. |
Eleven |
20km From the Middle Arm Road turnoff to Tumbling Waters, along the Cox Peninsula Road. |
Construction for this stage is around 30% complete, with design and vegetation clearing already completed. Energising the main feeder to Dundee is not dependent on this section being completed. |

If no delays are incurred from bad weather, Power and Water Corporation anticipates that the majority of customers whose properties front the following roads can connect to power progressively from early 2006:
Connection to the Dundee Beach Electrical Distribution System is covered by the rules set out in the Power and Water Corporation’s Distribution System Extension Policy or DSEP.
If you live along these roads and want to connect to the electricity network, you can start making payments towards the power connection costs.
Standard Power Connections
Everyone who benefits from the new electricity supply to Dundee will be required, under the Electricity Reform Act (NT), to pay a financial contribution. This is $5000 for single phase (up to 10kVA load) or $8000 for three phase (up to 25kVA load). Generally, property values increase as a consequence of the supply of electricity.
For domestic customers there are two options to pay this financial contribution:
Overriding Statutory Charge
All properties that can connect to the Dundee Beach Electricity Network, including those within the Dundee Beach and Native Point Subdivisions, will be gazetted as being within the Distribution System Extension Area.
Once gazetted, the obligation to pay the financial contribution, as mentioned above, arises and Power and Water becomes entitled to register an Overriding Statutory Charge (OSC) over titles in this area to ensure payment of the financial contribution.
Property owners who choose to pay their financial contributions upfront will not have an OSC registered on their property title. OSC’s will be placed on the titles of all other properties.
The OSC will remain registered on a property title until the financial contribution has been paid in full.
If you sell or transfer your property, the financial contribution must be paid in full at the time of sale or transfer
How do I arrange to have my lot connected
You will need to complete an “Application for Supply” form to establish a power supply agreement with Power and Water. This form is available at Power and Water front service counters in Palmerston and Darwin; or by calling 8985 7279. A standard account establishment fee of $56 will apply. However, if you require a three-phase connection for a residential block, an additional fee of $291 applies. You will need to engage a licensed electrical contractor to install your meter pole and internal wiring for your premises. The electrical contractor will be aware of all the necessary requirements, they will first submit a “Notice of Intention” and on completion of works they will issue a “Certificate of Compliance” which confirms your property is safe to connect.
How long before I get connected
On receipt of the above “Application for Supply”, Power and Water will arrange a site meeting to discuss the position of your meter pole and the connection date.
If you require a standard overhead service from the existing low voltage reticulation, Power and Water will have you connected within six working weeks from receipt of payment and a Certificate of Completion from your electrician.
If a Dedicated Transformer needs to be placed on an existing pole adjacent to your property, this will require extra planning and may take up to 12 weeks to connect your service from receipt of payment and a Notification Of Intention from your electrician.
Where will the power go in your property
If your property is on the same side as the powerline, your point of attachment for the low voltage service will be no further than twenty metres inside the property boundary.
If you are on the opposite side of the road from the powerline, the point of attachment for the low voltage service will be no further than one metre inside the property boundary.
At no point is an overhead service permitted to cross your neighbour’s property.
You will be responsible for the supply and installation of the meter/service pole. Your electrical contractor can help with this.
Commercial or Industrial Customers
Commercial or industrial customers will be individually negotiated, depending on maximum demand and a number of other factors.
In these cases, 50% (half) of any capital contributions will be required prior to works commencing and the remaining monies owed must be paid prior to the final connection. A standard account establishment fee of $56 will also apply.
If you are unsure about your power load requirements, you should consult your electrical contractor.
Customers requiring high voltage extensions
For domestic customers, if you require a high voltage extension, in addition to the relevant charges stated above, a distance charge of $15 000 per kilometre for single phase or $21 000 per kilometre for three phase will also be charged.
For commercial or industrial customers, if you require a high voltage extension, the applicable charges will be based on Power and Water’s Capital Contributions Policy.
It will be your responsibility to clear the powerline route within your property, keep trees clear of the line and maintain a track to each pole.
A 10-metre wide electricity supply easement must be surveyed and registered on your property title, at your cost.

While there is insufficient funding to connect every customer in the area, Power and Water is committed to conducting a feasibility study to determine future power extensions in the area. This study will use an independent consultant to make recommendations on extending the power network to remaining areas, and the most logical and cost efficient methods to do this.
Jointly funded by the Northern Territory Government and Power and Water Corporation, the Government has contributed $3.8 million and Power and Water $2.7 million for the planning, design and construction of this project.
