The NT Plumbers & Drainers Licensing Board is a statutory authority established under section 5 of the Plumbers & Drainers Licensing Act. It is responsible for the issue of Advanced Tradesman licences and Journeyman registration cards.

The Board administers the Plumbers and Drainers Licensing Act 1983, which applies to declared plumbing licence areas. The Board ensures that only qualified persons obtain licences, registration cards and certificates. It is also responsible for the assessment and maintenance of standards of workmanship and consumer protection by investigation of complaints and, where appropriate, taking disciplinary action.

The Board functions in conjunction with other authorities which, under their respective legislation, require authorised plumbing and drainage works to be carried out by licensed tradesmen.

Forms and general information for plumbing licences are also available through the Territory Business Centres.

For more specific information about Plumbers and Drainers licences please contact the Plumbers and Drainers Licensing Board on 08 8999 8972.

For specific information about becoming a certifying plumber contact the Building Practitioners Board.

New Licence Requirements

Holders of Journeyman registrations should note that the Board has approved new requirements for Advanced Tradesman licences to be introduced in 2010. For details of the new requirements, please see the licensing page of this site.

Backflow Prevention Course

Backflow Prevention Courses are held from time to time at Charles Darwin University in Darwin and Alice Springs. For bookings and information about future courses, contact Peter Rintel at CDU on 8946 7189 or by email. Dates will be posted here when available.

If you are qualified to install and test Backflow Prevention Devices, your licence/registration card can show this. Just send the Registrar a copy of your certificate and she will issue you with a new card, complete with endorsement.

Looking for a Licensed Plumber?

You can find a licensed plumber by checking on the list of licensed Advanced Tradesmen. This list was updated on 2 November.

If you are a licensed plumber and your name is not shown, you should contact the Registrar on 8999 8972. It may be that the Board does not have your current address and you have not received a renewal notice.

If you are looking for a plumber and cannot find his name on the list, contact the Registrar on 8999 8972 to check that he is licensed in the NT.

Please note that a Journeyman is not a licensed plumber and cannot contract for work directly with a customer. All work carried out by a Journeyman must be supervised by an Advanced Tradesman. A list of currently registered Journeymen is available from the Registrar.

An Advanced Tradesman who wishes to certify (sign off) work must be registered as a Certifying Plumber and Drainer with the Building Practitioners Board.

Review of Legislation

The Plumbers and Drainers Licensing Act is to be reviewed in the not too distant future. If you would like to make any suggestions for changes or additions to the legislation, please send them to the Registrar by mail or email.
