Generic Terms

 

 

Generic terms are that part of a place name used to describe the type of place the name refers to is road, court, highway, mountain, hill, creek, plain, lagoon.

The generic term used will depending upon the type of place the name is applied to.

Road naming

Although a large variety of generic terms have been used for roads in the past, the Place Names Committee has determined that for consistency across the Northern Territory only specific generic terms will in future be recommended for roads, be it a through road or a cul-de-sac. Feature naming

The Committee is currently developing a standardised list of generic terms for used in the Northern Territory. The list will provide definitions for each generic term and appropriate designator for that particular feature type. Whilst the list is being compiled it is suggested the Committee for Geographical Names of Australasia Glossary of Generic Terms be consulted.
