Territory Support Division
The mission of the Territory Support Division is to provide general
and specialist support to other units of the Northern Territory
Police and other organisations on its behalf. The unit was
formed in 1978 as part of a national framework of similar units
based in capital cities throughout Australia.
The group has a number of internal sections, with specialist training
provided for specific tasks.
In addition there are a number of roles that the group is required
to train for and members are tasked with the maintenance of a capability
in these areas. Eventually members cross train in several sections
and roles.
Search and rescue
During searches the group can provide search co-ordination and
manpower at short notice. Members are trained in navigation, field-craft,
first aid and survival.
Manpower assistance
The group is often tasked with a variety of miscellaneous tasks
where a large manpower commitment is required rapidly.
Police Dive Unit
The dive unit is called upon for a wide range of tasks - from
underwater recovery of evidence or bodies to customs searches of
vessels. In addition they cross train as drop-masters and
assist in air/sea rescue.
Vertical Rescue Unit
While the Fire and Rescue Service has the principal responsibility
for rescue, there are some circumstances where specialist climbing
techniques are required or where the rescue is in a very remote
locality. In these instances this unit is called upon due
to its high level of mobility and adaptability.
Bomb Response Unit
| Jointly funded by the Commonwealth, this unit has the responsibility
of dealing with all civilian improvised explosive or incendiary
devices. This unit works closely with the military Explosive
Ordnance Disposal units who have a responsibility for military
ordinance. |

Police Tactical Group
The Commonwealth jointly funds the group to provide a capability
to deal with the containment and resolution of violent offences
beyond the capability of General Duties Police.
Public disorder
On several occasions the group has been required to assist at
remote communities where the resources of the local police are
over-stretched. The group is also sent to demonstrations where
it is likely that offences may be committed.
Response patrol
 |
 |
One of the group's roles is providing rapid tactical assistance
to General Duties Police in the event of armed offenders or
during high risk operations. An element is available for this
purpose as an interim measure before deployment of a larger
group. |
Close personal protection
The group is responsible for the co-ordination and conduct of
personal protection of witnesses or dignitaries within the Northern
Territory.
Counter disaster operations
Under counter disaster plans the group forms survey and rescue
teams to provide a framework for operations in the field in conjunction
with many other government departments.
Training
The group provides assistance to other sections and organisations
with specialist training particularly as it relates to the topics
discussed above.
