Major Crash Section
The Major Crash Section is based in Darwin and Alice Springs. Both
sections offer support to police Territory-wide. The section's
primary role is to investigate serious and fatal crashes throughout
the Territory. It also investigates departmental (Police,
Fire and Emergency Services) crashes.
Major Crash Section officers have access to many and varied tools
to assist in crash investigations and traffic enforcement. The
most commonly used are tape measures, road marking paint and a
digital camera.
Other equipment includes:
- Total Work Station
- Vericom Computer
- Wheel Base Jig
- Radar and Laser speed detection devices
Vehicles used by the Major Crash Section
Darwin and Alice Springs Officers use Ford XR6 turbo sedans
for crash investigation and traffic enforcement.
Darwin officers currently use the BMW R1150 RT police motorcycle
to assist with crash investigation, traffic enforcement, VIP escort
duties and traffic flow monitoring at major sporting and public
functions.
When Major Crash Section staff are not investigating serious and
fatal crashes, they have a secondary task of traffic enforcement
and public education. Duties such as giving talks on the
traffic laws of the Northern Territory to schools, defence force
staff, community and other interested groups will hopefully help
lower the Territory road toll.
