Marine And Fisheries Enforcement Unit
Since 1980 the Northern Territory Police Marine and Fisheries
Enforcement Unit has enforced the Fisheries Act, Regulations
and management plans.
Enforcement
Police enforce
- amateur and commercial fishing laws
- marine safety regulations
- Territory and Commonwealth legislation covering the fishing
industry.
This is done with sea, inland waterways, land patrols and air
patrols.
Search and Rescue
The unit, along with Police Air Wing, responds to search and rescue
calls initiated by local or national authorities. National search
and rescue operations are coordinated through Australian Search
and Rescue (AusSAR) and can involve Air Services Australia and
the Australian Defence Forces. The NT Police Marine and Fisheries
Enforcement Unit patrols harbour and boat ramps to check safety
equipment on pleasure craft
Unit Objectives
- Through compliance and enforcement, ensure protection of the
fish stocks of the Northern Territory.
- Minimise the impact of illegal fishing activity on behalf
of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority in respect of
the Northern Prawn Fishery.
- To ensure compliance with marine safety requirements.
- To provide an effective marine search and rescue capability.
- To provide command, supervisory, promotional development,
marine qualifications and search and rescue training.
