Operation Sharp Edge incidents
Wednesday 12 October 2005 (1445 hrs CST)
Just two days into Operation Sharp Edge police have already been
called to three stabbing incidents in Alice Springs.
About 8.30 last night police were called to Abbotts Camp after
a report of a stabbing. A 24-year-old man was taken to hospital
after he was slashed across the face with a knife during an argument.
Police are investigating the incident.
Shortly after, police were called to Hidden Valley camp following
a report that a 22-year-old woman had been stabbed in the leg several
times during a domestic incident.
She was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Meanwhile, in Borroloola, a 41-year-old man was injured when he
was stabbed several times to the face and abdomen. He has been
medivaced to Darwin for treatment.
This was the fourth incident of assault with edged weapons in
Southern Region since the launch of Operation Sharp Edge on Monday.
(Included in these figures was the incident where a female shop
assistant was threatened with a pair of scissors in Alice Springs
on Monday night.)
Superintendent Richard Bryson said the incidents highlighted the
importance of operations targeting the removal of weapons from
the community.
"Operation Sharp Edge was launched on Monday and since then
there have been these four incidents of assaults with edged weapons," Supt
Bryson said.
"Two of the incidents last night were in town camps and
as a result of violent arguments. There has been a worrying trend
in the past few years with an increasingly high number of people
carrying knives. The consequence of this is they are often used
during arguments."
Supt Bryson said Operation Sharp Edge aimed at removing such weapons
from the community and educating people about the dangers and potential
penalties carrying such weapons attracted.
Operation Sharp Edge will run until 2 December.
