NT Freedom of Information Act

The Information Act (NT)

The Information Act is Northern Territory’s Freedom of Information Legislation and provides the community with access to government information including personal information.

The Information Act also protects the privacy of personal information held by public sector organisations by giving individuals the right to access and the right to correct their personal information, and ensuring organisations collect and handle personal information responsibly.

Accessing Information Held by Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services

To do this, you need to apply in writing.  Application forms are available at police stations or on the NTPFES internet site and, although the forms are not the only way to go about it, they are a useful guide to the information needed to lodge a valid application.

Your application should be lodged at a police station.  To make sure your personal information is not given to someone else, you will need to present some form of photographic identification, such as your driver’s licence, when applying.

Charges that May Apply

If you are seeking access or correct only to your personal information, there is no application fee.

If you are seeking access to government information, or a mix of personal and non-personal information, a $30 application fee is payable.

The standard application form includes a tick box, indicating whether your application is for personal or government information and it is best to tick the box unless your application is clearly not personal.

If your application is judged to be ‘government information’ you will be advised and any fee will be negotiated.  The schedule of fees and charges is set by the government and is shown below.*

Processing fees may also be charged for applications for ‘personal information’ in circumstances where there is a large quantity of material requiring processing.
