Those affected by crime will get even greater access to help and support following the official opening of the Victims of Crime NT office and the hiring of an additional employee.

Minister for Justice Dr Peter Toyne said the official opening of the premises in Knuckey Street will allow the group to continue its vital assistance to the victims of crime.

“Although there are fewer victims of crime under the Martin Government (19% drop in property crime and 4% less reported assaults in the Northern Territory in the past 12 months) those who are affected need all the help they can get,” Dr Toyne said.

“The location provides a terrific central location within easy reach of the Police station across the road.

“It’s a great space for the Victims of Crime NT to carry on the important business of assisting victims of crime.

“I would like to thank Sue Lowry and the many volunteers who put in their precious time undertaking long hours of work to make our community a better place.

“A real sense of community can be developed in the face of adversity.

“No one relishes being a victim of crime, but when this valuable resource is here with its wonderful support, it can take a little of the pain out of the experience

“The Government appreciates the work Victims of Crime undertakes and really values what I think is a collaborative and constructive relationship.

“I am impressed by the approach of the Victims of Crime NT, the level of training and the dedication of the organisation.

“In my role as Minister for Central Australia I am also very much aware of the needs of victims of crime in the Centre.

“I look forward to the organisation liaising further with the Office of Central Australia to explore ways to provide victims services there,” Dr Toyne said.

The opening is part of the Building Safer Communities - A Framework for Crime Prevention and Community Safety - 2004-2009 which was launched in October.
