The Territory’s 7 th Regional Crime Prevention Council has been established in Palmerston.

Regional Crime Prevention Councils are already established in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Nhulunbuy and Groote Eylandt, and Indigenous Regional Crime Prevention Councils are also now in the Top End and Central Australia. The Councils are supported by the Office of Crime Prevention.

“I am delighted to announce that another Region al Crime Prevention Council has been established”, said Dr Peter Toyne, Minister for Justice and Attorney General.

“The Palmerston Crime Prevention Committee, which has been actively addressing crime prevention issues in the community for some time, is taking a step forward and formally taking on a Regional Crime Prevention Council role.”

“I’m pleased to be able to acknowledge the great work this group has been doing, and in particular the support the group has had from the Palmerston City Council which has been a key player in the Committee and has been a great driver of local initiatives to address crime.”

Regional Crime Prevention Councils are making a significant contribution to address complex social issues, including crime, in their local areas. They are a mechanism for community involvement in crime prevention and an important communication link between the community and the Northern Territory Government.

“I have offered my congratulations and support to the new Council and in particular Mayor Annette Burke who chairs the Palmerston Crime Prevention Committee” said Dr Peter Toyne.

Developing localised and targeted crime prevention initiatives is a key role of the crime prevention councils, a role that is supported by Government through the Office of Crime Prevention.
