A review has been ordered into the St John Ambulance Service in the Northern Territory following concerns raised by a Coronial Inquiry and the public.

The Coronial into the death of Stephen John Power was critical of some aspects of the delivery of services by St John in the Northern Territory .

Minister for Health Dr Peter Toyne said although the St John Ambulance Service makes a valuable contribution to the Territory, a review is needed to address its problems.

“The questions raised by the Coronial and the concerns of members of the public require the Government to take action, and that’s what we have done,” Dr Toyne said.

“We can’t have clouds of doubt hanging over the credibility of the Territory’s ambulance service.”

“Taxpayers dollars pay for this service, and the public should expect to have the best service and be confident that’s what they are getting,” Dr Toyne said.

A senior officer of the New South Wales Ambulance will conduct the wide-ranging review which will cover the St John’s delivery of services, effectiveness of organisational structure, culture and management.

Particular attention will be given to the provision of prompt, high quality, community ambulance transport services that comply with the professional standards, as defined by the Australian Convention of Ambulance Authorities.

The review will identify problems and recommend ways to fix them.

The St John Ambulance Service sees the benefit of the review and will fully co-operate with the exercise.
