Hon Clare Martin MLA, Chief Minister

Residents of Yirrkala and Nhulunbuy will be able to meet with Territory Government Ministers face-to-face to speak about issues of interest when Community Cabinet visits their communities next week.

Community Cabinet will begin on Monday with a visit to Yirrkala before arriving in Nhulunbuy later in the morning.

Cabinet will meet with Yirrkala Dhanbul and Laynhapuy Homelands Associations at Yirrkala, and the Chief Minister, Clare Martin, and Minister assisting her on women’s issues, Marion Scrymgour, will also attend a Women’s meeting in the Community.

They will also attend a Women’s Forum later in the day at Nhulunbuy.

The Women’s Forums, provide Territory women direct access to the Chief Minister and Government to raise issues of interest.

Ministers will attend an array of meetings with local business, Government agencies and community representatives.

Ms Martin and Deputy Chief Minister and Treasurer, Syd Stirling, will attend a Business Round Table, another of the new community consultative processes set in place by the Government, before an informal evening social function for other members of the community.

“Community Cabinet will give people from the two communities a chance to meet Territory Ministers at a range of venues and functions,” Ms Martin said.

“These visits are an important part of the program to take government to the people of the Territory.

“As well as promoting open and accountable government, they give local residents an opportunity to raise issues with Ministers and senior public servants who accompany them”.

The Yirrkala and Nhulunbuy Community Cabinet will be the twenty-seventh held since Labor came to Government.

“We are committed to holding at least 30 Community Cabinet meetings in our first term of office,” Ms Martin said.
