Budget 2006 will build the Territory's future with an emphasis on creating jobs and growing the economy for Territorians, investing in the future of all Territorians by building on enhancing our unique lifestyle.

A record Employment, Education and Training budget of $630.7 million sees $84 million dedicated to employment and training programs, progressing towards the target of 10 000 new apprentices and trainees commencing training. This provides more incentives for businesses taking on apprentices and trainees.

It delivers less tax, including payroll tax. In Budget 2006, the payroll tax free threshold will be raised to $1.25 million - a total of $66 182 savings for businesses since payroll tax reforms began.

These changes make the Territory the lowest taxing jurisdiction in Australia for businesses with up to 100 staff from 1 July 2006.

Budget 2006 sees a record level of investment of $788.6 million in Health and Community Services.This brings spending in this critical area up by 64%.
