Economic Analysis

Northern Territory Economy

A detailed assessment of the Territory economy, including recent performance and growth prospects, employment, population, trade, and Australian and international conditions. Includes chapters on the performance and outlook for major Territory industries.

Territory Economic Review

Released monthly, the Territory Economic Review provides a wrap-up of the latest economic and demographic indicators. Each Review provides analysis of around fifteen indicators, with particular focus on the Territory.

The Review also presents a range of time series data and state by state comparisons of major economic indicators to present the Territory economy in the context of the national economic environment.

Northern Territory Economic Briefs

Northern Territory Economic briefs provide up to date analysis of the Territory economy and it’s performance in relation to the Australian economy.

Northern Territory Grocery Price Survey

In August 1999, the Legislative Assembly Select Committee on Territory Food Prices presented a report on their Inquiry into Food Prices in the Northern Territory. A key recommendation of this report was that Government monitor grocery prices across the Northern Territory and that the results be published on a regular basis. Treasury was given the task of developing and conducting an appropriate survey to implement this recommendation.

Social Analysis

The key aim of the area is to explore social factors that impact on the economy, and changes in the Territory economy that affect community and individual well-being. The development and use of evidence-based policy is promoted across all Northern Territory Government agencies.

Social Briefs

Northern Territory Social Briefs provide the latest key social statistics about the Territory. These briefs cover a broad range of social indicators, such as population, family and community, health and welfare, education and training, employment, economic resources and other areas of social concern. The briefs draw on various sources of data including Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australian Bureau of Statistics and National Centre for Vocational Education Research.

Demography

Analysis and advice is provided on demographic issues that impact on the Territory. Key questions centre on the accuracy of estimates of the current size, growth and composition of the Territory's population and its position relative to other states and territories. Key research topics include exploring trends and consequences of population ageing and mobility in the Territory.

A major project currently underway explores interstate and overseas migration to and from the Territory. The NT Mobility Project, made possible through a research arrangement between Treasury, Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, aims to better understand the highly transient nature of much of the Territory's population, by gaining insight into moving intentions. Click here to read more about this research project.

Another key project concerns the development of population projections for the Territory. The CDU has developed a population projections model for the Northern Territory Government using assumptions about future growth that have been determined in consultation with key agencies. The model's outputs will include projections for the Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations of the Territory and its regions.

Statistical Co-ordination

Treasury has responsibility for coordinating statistical matters across Northern Territory Government agencies. It provides secretariat services and membership on the Statistical Priorities Advisory Committee (SPAC), a sub-committee of the Coordination Committee that determines whole of government analytical needs and oversees the work program of the Statistical Liaison Committee (SLC).

Treasury also chairs and provides secretariat services to the Statistical Liaison Committee which aims to identify and resolve statistical issues that affect more than one agency thereby increasing quality statistical information available to Government for decision—making. It is responsible to the Statistical Priorities Advisory Committee for progressing the answers to key policy questions by providing appropriate statistical advice and analysis.

An officer outposted from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) assists Treasury with statistical coordination. The Senior Director Economic and Social Analysis is the Northern Territory’s representative on the Australian Statistics Advisory Council (ASAC) which advises the ABS on statistical priorities.
