How many FOITs will Treasury be taking for the 2008 program?
Although the final number will depend on business unit requirements, the number is expected to be between 10 to 12 graduates.
Do I have to move to Darwin to be a part of the FOIT Program?
Yes. All graduate positions are located in Darwin.
I don’t have a degree in either finance or accounting – will I still be considered for a position on the FOIT Program?
Yes! Treasury considers all applications based on their merit and their ability to meet the selection criteria, regardless of the degree studied. Although the FOIT program stands for ‘Finance Officer in Training’, each year we take graduates from a variety of different backgrounds including business, management, law, commerce, economics, and public administration just to name a few.
I don't finish my degree until the end of this semester - can I still apply now?
Yes! As long as you are due to complete your degree before the end of 2007, you can apply for the 2008 FOIT program.
What is the difference between Agency, Department and business unit?
The term Agency refers to a whole organisation, for example Northern Territory Treasury, Department of Corporate and Information Services and Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment. ‘Agency’ and ‘Department’ are used interchangeably.
A business unit is a business unit within an Agency that has specified functions and contributes to the output of that Agency. To see the business units that form part of Northern Territory Treasury see Treasury business units for more information.
Will I get to choose which business unit I am placed with in Treasury?
Your placement in a business unit is dependent on three factors:
- the business requirements of that business unit,
- your preferences, and
- your qualifications
Although we endeavour to place you in one of your preferences, this may not always be the case. As part of the FOIT program, we encourage graduates to rotate to business units where the work is different to that which they have studied, in order to develop additional skills and flexibility. Many of our previous graduates have enjoyed a ‘different’ rotation for this very reason!
I have submitted my application for the FOIT program – what happens now?
All applications received by the due date will be collated and summarised for the selection panel. Applications will be shortlisted and those successful applicants will be contacted for interview. Please refer to the FOIT Recruitment Process for more information.
If I am successful in securing a position on the FOIT program – what should I expect in the first twelve months?
Initially you will receive a two day introductory course on Treasury that gives you the ability to meet fellow FOIT graduates, Directors of Treasury and key personnel within the Agency. After this, you will be placed in a business unit, and from day one, start contributing to the work of the business unit.
During the year, FOITs are required to attend half day training sessions as part of the FOIT program. These sessions may involve research, group work, analysis or lecture style learning, and complement the on-the-job training received within business units.
During the year, quarterly assessment reports are completed to ensure FOITs receive timely feedback on their performance in business units. FOITs are rotated 3-4 times during the program to give them exposure to different functions Treasury is responsible for.
