Joint APA-PANZ meeting on the 2006 Census in Australia and New Zealand

A joint meeting of the Australian Population Association and the Population Association of New Zealand will be held at the Convention Centre immediately following the APA conference on the afternoon of Thursday 3rd July.

The aim of this session is to discuss and compare trends and issues between Australia and New Zealand reflected in areas such as fertility trends, population ageing, migration and spatial issues. The meeting will focus on the 2006 Census in Australia and New Zealand and is open to all conference delegates. Please join us for an interesting afternoon of trans-Tasman discussion.

Welcome and introduction
Associate Professor Natalie Jackson, President APA and Mr Cyril Mako, President PANZ

The focus of this meeting is on comparisons from the 2006 Census in the context of longer term trends and future expectations for Australia and New Zealand. In three comparative sessions, presenters from each side of the Tasman sea offer a ‘joint’ comparative presentation.

Session A: Indicators 
Australia: Mr Patrick Corr (Australian Bureau of Statistics)
New Zealand: Mr Mansoor Khawaja (Statistics New Zealand)

Overview and some issues such as:

  • Undercount and what we learned from it
  • Changes in age structure
  • Trans-tasman migration
  • Australians in New Zealand and vice versa
  • Ethnic Diversity
  • Lessons about fertility from the number of children born question in the 2006 Census

Session B: Migration

Reflections on comparative trends and current research agendas: Issues and questions
Australia: Professor Graeme Hugo (University of Adelaide)
