Background papers on Summit Themes

Theme 1: Creating an attractive business environment

The business environment in the Northern Territory is influenced by a range of factors including: the taxation and regulatory environment, government policy, labour market and infrastructure. A supportive business operating environment will provide for increased investment and jobs growth.

Theme 2: Promoting Investment

Investment, both public and private, is a key driver of economic growth in the Northern Territory. Investment both stimulates demand for goods and services and builds the future capacity of local businesses. The key question as we move forward is how to promote investment beyond the major projects to broaden the industry base and reduce volatility in Northern Territory economic performance.

Theme 3: Expanding Markets

Dominated by the resource based export sector, future economic growth in the Northern Territory is inextricably linked to global market forces. The challenge is to build on existing exports and markets as well as diversifying into new markets and new export products.

Theme 4: Developing Business and Industry Capacity and Capability

To prosper in the face of stiff competition, we have to do things more smartly, more efficiently, effectively, cheaply and still maintain profitability. The challenge is to identify the key steps required to sharpen our competitive edge.

Theme 5: Building and Retaining a Skilled and Productive Workforce

One of the most significant issues facing Australian and Northern Territory businesses today is the ability to source, train and retain skilled people. The challenge is to attract and retain skilled labour to the Territory for the long term, engage Indigenous people and develop a labour pool with the appropriate skills and education to contribute to the Territory economy for the future.
