The Hon. Norman Kirkwood Ewing
(1919 - 1920)
Norman Ewing served as a
Deputy Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory from
1919 - 1920.
He was born on 26 December 1870
at Wollongong in New South Wales and was educated at the Illawarra
College in Wollongong and Oaklands at Mittagong.
He was articled to M A H Fitzhardinghe
and was admitted to practice in 1894.
After moving to Perth in 1897 he
was admitted to the Bar and established the firm Ewing & Downing.
After deciding to move into politics,
he became the Independent member for Swan a position he held from
1897 - 1901.
After marrying Maude Louisa on
15.10.1897 he moved to Hobart in 1905 and was admitted to practice
in 1906 becoming a partner in the firm Ewing & Saeger.
He became the Leader of the Tasmanian
Opposition in 1914 and was appointed a King's Counsel in 1915,
eventually being elevated to the Supreme Court bench in September
of that year.
Norman Ewing moved to Launceston
in 1919 to take up permanent residence as a Judge and from 1923
- 1924 was the Administrator of Tasmania.
He was Chairman of the Committee
that drafted the Tasmanian Criminal Code in 1924 and sat on numerous
Royal Commissions including the Royal Commission into the administration
of the Northern Territory in 1919 - 1920.
Norman Ewing died on 19 July 1928.
