The Lands and Mining Tribunal is an independent statutory body established under the Lands and Mining Tribunal Act, which commenced on 1 August 1998. The Tribunal is currently vested with jurisdiction in the following areas: (i) making recommendations is respect of compulsory land acquisitions under the Lands Acquisition Act 1978, (ii) decisions or lack of them by the Development Consent Authority under the Planning Act 1999; and (iii) compensation claims in respect of land compulsory acquired as a consequence of orders of the body which preceded the Tribunal.
AGES is an Annual Geoscience Exploration Seminar run by the Northern Territory Geological Survey to provide geoscientific information and exploration data to assist the mining and exploration industry to make the best possible decisions in planning for exploration programs in the Territory.
The Northern Territory hosts some of the largest mines and mineral deposits in the world. Currently mined world-class deposits include: manganese; bauxite; lead-zinc-silver; gold and uranium. The Northern Territory also contains significant deposits of copper, diamonds, tin, tantalum, vermiculite, magnesite, cobalt, iron ore and rare earths.

The primary focus of the Industry Development and Investment Services Unit is to grow the economic base of the Northern Territory by working with targeted industry sectors to identify new and additional opportunities.

Mines and Energy is responsible for policy development for, and administration of, the mining, energy and petroleum industries in the Northern Territory.
Exploration is the lifeblood of the mining industry. It is the activity through which new resources are discovered. Successful exploration therefore prolongs the life of existing mines or, perhaps more importantly, establishes mining operations in new regions of previously unknown or unrealised potential. The downstream effect of successful exploration can be significant in terms of growing regional economies. The Northern Territory Government has committed to a four year exploration initiative titled Bringing Forward Discovery which commenced in July 2007 and is designed to assist explorers to make the next major mineral and petroleum discoveries in the Territory.
NTGS conducts field-based geoscientific projects throughout the Territory. These aim to collect, interpret and synthesise geoscientific data, which is then disseminated free-of-charge to the mining, petroleum and hydrothermal sectors, and to other clients, in order to promote the Territory as an attractive exploration investment destination.
