The Top End's pristine marine and freshwater environments are major attractions for Territorians and visitors alike. The Northern Territory's waterways are unique, diverse and unspoilt, and it is little wonder that recreational fishing and boating are two of the Territory's most popular pastimes.
The Parks & Wildlife Commission NT (the Commission) has the power to regulate or prohibit the carrying on of any trade or commerce in a park, reserve or other land committed under a law of the Northern Territory under the care, control and management of the Commission in conjunction with the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act and By-laws.

Community education assists with the management of parks by promoting conservation of the natural and cultural environment by providing educational programs to young Territorians and the broader community. Educational programs are provided to all sectors of the community to promote positive visitor behaviour to current and future park users. We focus on community education initiatives for young people of today who will be the community leaders of tomorrow. If they use and value the park system, and understand its multiple roles, the chances for future protection of the Northern Territory's biodiversity will be much improved.
Since 1981 when the first jointly managed park, Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, was established the Parks and Wildlife Service has entered into joint management arrangements with indigenous Territorians in several parks and reserves. The aim being to protect the biological diversity of the parks whilst still serving visitor and community needs for education and enjoyment.
