Biosecurity

Primary Industries is responsible for developing the Northern Territory's agricultural, horticultural and pastoral industries. It works in partnership with producers, industry bodies, community groups and related agencies to promote industry growth.
Animal industries in the Northern Territory are dominated by beef cattle production, with lesser industries in buffalo, camels, crocodiles and bees. The role of the Biosecurity and Product Integrity division (BPI) is to prevent, exclude, effectively manage and where possible eradicate risks to the economy, animal and plant industries, environment and human health posed by pests, dieases and chemical-residues and to ensure the continued access to domestic and international markets for Territory primary produce.
The Animal Welfare Act, which commenced in March 2000, is the legislation governing animal welfare in the Northern Territory.
