Community Health




The Department of Health exists to provide services that work together for the health and well-being of our communities: maximising physical health but also the mental, social and environmental well-being of all Territorians.
The Alcohol and Other Drugs Program aims to minimise harm associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, through a range of prevention, education, treatment and community action initiatives.
The Department provides a range of allied health professional services for the community. Depending on the type and nature of the service required, it may be provided in settings such as hospitals, community health centres, in the home and community, schools, rehabilitation units and childcare centres.
The Cancer Council NT is a non-government, charitable, community based organisation committed to raising funds for the purpose of reducing the impact of cancer. It provides information, awareness and support for people affected by cancer.
The Centre of Disease Control has offices in the five major urban centres in the NT and provides clinical services, including screening and contact tracing, for sexual health, blood born viruses, tuberculosis, leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases. CDC's role includes policy and clinical guideline development for these diseases.
We are a dynamic community-based primary health care service network promoting wellness and addressing illness, injury and impairment through quality evidence-based community health care for the NT community.
The Community Visitor Program specialises in complaints resolution and advocacy for people receiving treatment from NT Mental Health Services. It is an independent service established to promote and protect the rights of Territorians affected by mental illness.
CRANA was founded to highlight Remote Health Issues of people who live in remote areas and the inequities, quality and accessibility in services available to these Australians.

Diabetes Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that offers personalised and practical assistance to benefit people with diabetes and their carers and provides a forum for the development of national policies.
Epilepsy Action Australia provides information, education, guidance and support to all people affected by seizures and epilepsy.
Expanding Health Service Delivery Initiative (EHSDI) is part of the joint initiative between the Australian Government and Northern Territory Government to progress both Governments' Closing the Gap policies and address Aboriginal disadvantage, with substantial funding allocated to improve access to health and education services. Primary Health service delivery in the Northern Territory is in the midst of significant reform in the following.
The Nutrition And Physical Activity Program's vision is 'improved nutritional status and health of Territorians' and its work is guided by the Nutrition and Physical Activity Program Action Plan 2007-2012.
The Remote Health Atlas website enables Remote Health Workers across the Northern Territory and visitors to the site to access comprehensive health resources online. It is hoped that the availablity of this information is helpful to all users and visitors.
The RFDS provides broad range of services in rural and remote areas of Australia including traditional emergency flights for victims of accidents or illness, regular clinic flights to isolated communities with teams of doctors, nurses and specialists whilst increasingly providing critical support to the metropolitan area.
The website has been developed as part of the Northern Territory Safe Sex No Regrets Campaign that is running from August 2008 for twelve months. The campaign is aimed at people aged 15-29 years old
For many years medical specialists in the Northern Territory have provided services to rural and remote areas. Often these services are based on the goodwill and philanthropic nature of the Doctors and over time some funding has been dedicated to expand and improve Territorians access to specialist services.
Avoid getting stung. Do not enter the sea and most importantly do not let children enter the sea during stinger season. Beware of shallow water in creeks and near boat ramps, and wear protective clothing when fishing or boating. Even in surf conditions Box Jellyfish may be present.
VRE stands for Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus. The Enterococcus is a bacterium (germ) that everyone has in their bowel. Vancomycin is one of the antibiotics used to treat infections caused by the Enterococcus germ. Sometimes this germ develops resistance to Vancomycin. When this occurs, the infection can no longer be treated by Vancomycin.
