The local bus service, ASBUS, is the backbone of Alice Springs' public transport network. The three new brightly painted buses pictured below feature improved access for people with prams, wheelchairs and other mobility considerations.
The Department of Planning and Infrastructure manages and maintains an extensive arterial (main road) network of cycle paths across the Northern Territory.
To operate a motor vehicle in any public place in the Northern Territory including driving in car parks and other private property where the public has access you will need to be licensed.
The Marine Safety Branch is responsible for a range of marine matters including safety, commercial vessel surveys, crew certificates of competency, hire and drive vessel registration, recreational boating safety, marine communications for non-solas vessels, search and rescue, marine pollution, oil spill management and clean up training, plan and design approval for new vessels.
The Transport Group is responsible for the provision of safe, accessible transport infrastructure for Territorians and visitors to the Territory. This includes research, analysis, planning, economic evaluation and policy development service. The group provides urban public transport services in Darwin and Alice Springs and dedicated transport services for students in the Northern Territory.
The functions of the Rail Safety Unit have been transferred to the National Rail Safety Regulator effective from 20 January 2013.

The Road Report Website is an essential service for all road users within the Northern Territory of Australia. This website provides up to date road condition information on all Government controlled roads including graphical representations of restrictions on regional maps.
The Northern Territory Government and the Road Safety Council of the NT, together with other stakeholders are working to reduce the number of people killed or injured on Territory roads.
The Commercial Passenger Vehicle Branch of the Road Transport Division, is responsible for the development and implementation of commercial passenger vehicle policy within legislative frameworks and with due regard to Government, industry and key stakeholder requirements.
