Training in the Northern Territory
The Department of Education and Training (DET) manages and administers programs and funding arrangements for the delivery of vocational education and training in the Territory.
DET is responsible for:
- Overseeing and funding the training of apprentices and trainees;
- Purchasing the services of public and private training providers to deliver a broad range of vocational education and training qualifications and competencies;
- Developing and managing a suite of community responsive training
initiatives, including but not limited to:
- Training for Remote Youth;
- Flexible Response Funding;
- Pre-vocational programs;
- Consulting with industry, government and the community on training needs and priorities.
DET is also responsible for efficient and effective management of regulatory functions relevant to the Northern Territory Employment and Training Act, Education Act, Higher Education Act and Australian Quality frameworks. This is achieved through:
- Administering quality and regulatory systems;
- Ensuring that training and accredited courses meet the needs of industry, community and other regulatory bodies in the NT.
DET also provides for other programs that support employment outcomes. The are:
- Employer Incentive Scheme – financial incentives for employers who take on an additional apprentice or trainee
- Workwear / Workgear Bonus Scheme – financial incentives for new apprentices and trainees to assist them with costs associated with starting their career
- Workready Program – assisting secondary school students to become work ready and make the transition from school to work
- VET Scholarships – 40 vocational education and training scholarships per year worth $4000 each to assist students studying from Certificate level III to Diploma level
- Build Skills NT Initiative – up-skilling and re-skilling existing workers in skill shortage occupations or are to be affected by licensing or legislative requirements.
- Employment Disadvantaged Territorians - The Northern Territory Government has strategies and initiatives in place to assist employment disadvantaged Territorians become job ready.
These initiatives are apart of Jobs Plan 3 which continues the momentum of previous Job Plans by further assisting employment growth in the Territory and the development of a highly skilled and flexible workforce.
