Carol Palmer – Scientific Officer
Qualifications
Carol has 18 years experience as an ecologist working in northern Australia (including the Kimberley) and 2 years in central Australia. Carol has a Master of Science (by research) and a Graduate Diploma in Science (by research) and is completing a PhD on the ecology of two coastal dolphins in the NT.
Carol has been a research scientist and program manager with NRETA working on a number of threatened species (Carpentarian Rock-rat, Gouldian Finch, Golden Bandicoot), and has worked for a number of NGO’s including the Central Land Council and World wide Fund for Nature. Carol was the Program Coordinator for the Kimberley Fire Management Project.
Research
Carol has undertaken a wide range of projects in the Top End, Gulf and Kimberley regions including; biological surveys, threatened species research, , population dynamics of various animals and research on the way animals track resources through-out a landscape mosaic.
A focus of her research has been studying the two species of flying fox that occur in the NT, translocation of endangered species and working with local indigenous groups on biodiversity conservation on various islands off the NT.
Carol is also interested in biodiversity monitoring, particularly when animals occur in low numbers and options for monitoring in those situations, the impacts of threatening processes on coastal dolphins and working with the diverse range of people/and organisations in NT to work out solutions for better land and sea management.
