Data Requests

Requirements for Requesting Data

The Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) supplies Flora, Fauna and Vegetation data that is collected by the service and public alike. Data on species of conservation importance/rare or all species within an area may be requested. The data supplied may be either a checklist of species within the area or all occurrences of the species within the area and grid references per sighting. The data may be supplied for non commercial use but a fee applies for the supply where the data is to be used for a commercial use.

To supply accurate data, PWS requires grid references for a top left and bottom right rectangle of the area of the requested data. References may be provided in these formats:

  • Geo;
  • Degrees and Decimal minutes;
  • Decimal degrees; or
  • AMG/MGA (with relevant zone) and Datums of AGD66, GDA94 or WGA84.

Or an Arcview shapefile, Arcinfo export file or Mapinfo MIF file in geographic co-ordinates based upon GDA94 may be supplied.

The format in which the data is to be returned can vary from an Arcview shape file to a comma delimited text file.

Fee Structure and Digital Data Agreement

Commercial use - $100 per hour with a minimum of 1 hours work
Non Commercial - Free of charge (upon verification of use)

  Information needed from clients Description
1 Who: Your name/Company/University
2 Use/Purpose: What you plan to use the data for
3 ABN (if applicable): Australian Business Number
4 Type of data: What type of data do you require?
5 Complete or rare: A complete list of species present or rare species
6 Checklist or Detailed report:  
7 Format of data to be returned: Data type required - Arcview shapefile, Microsoft Access version, etc.,?
8 Grid references TL, BR: Top left corner and bottom right corner
