Northern Territory Plants

The Northern Territory has over 4000 species of native plants. A significant amount of these are endemic and a small number are data deficient or of conservation concern. With the Territory representing a significant part of the continent, there is also a great diversity of vegetation communities.  

Various branches of NRETA specialise in particular areas of NT flora and its management.

The Herbarium works on the taxonomy of native flora, updates species lists for the NT, and determines conservation status of individual species. Biodiversity Conservation is involved in studies of ecology and plant/animal interactions.

Natural Resource Management staff record vital information vegetation communities and structure to assist planning and monitor change. A number of Natural Resource Management staff are involved in control of invasive weed species and study and advise on the role fire in vegetation communities.


All divisions work frequently with other government departments  federal level such as quarantine, CSIRO.
