What Do I Require a Permit For?
All animals that are indigenous to Australia are classed as protected wildlife and a permit is required to keep these animals in the NT. Animals that are not indigenous to Australia and the NT are known as prohibited entrants and a permit is also required to keep these animals in the NT.
As identified in Section 43 of the Act “Protected Wildlife” means:
- All wildlife that:
- is in a park, reserve, sanctuary, wilderness zone or area of essential habitat; or
- is a vertebrate that is indigenous to Australia.
Animals that do not require a permit to be kept or sold in the NT can be found on the NT Exempt Species list.
All animals that are being sent into or out of the state require a permit to import or export from the NT.
Permits are also required to take or interfere with wildlife, to undertake scientific research on wildlife and to hunt feral pigs or protected wildlife such as waterfowl.
