Summary and Scope
Summary
This report presents an information base for the 20 nationally-defined bioregions which occur in the Northern Territory. Information listed for every bioregion includes: the extent of reservation (and other land tenure), land values, the reservation bias, known conservation values or other reservation priorities (including lists of threatened and unreserved plants and animals, species recorded mostly from the bioregion, tables of the extent and reservation status of every vegetation type present in the bioregion, refugial values and wetland values), lists of weed species recorded, amount of distributional data available, and lists of relevant references (including wildlife survey, land system mapping and resource appraisal surveys for pastoral properties). Previous conservation planning, if available, is summarised.
This report shows that NT broad-scale bioregions vary very substantially in their current reservation extent, information content and management problems and options. This document is not meant to provide detailed land use plans for every, or any, bioregion. Rather, the information assembled here is used to guide priorities for future conservation planning within and between bioregions.
Scope
The following scope items were defined for this project by agreement between ANCA and CCNT:
- Review the current data and information for the Northern Territory in the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation of Australia (IBRA), and provide the following information for revising the Northern Territory component of the IBRA report:
- the available biological and other information for each bioregion;
- the conservation values within each bioregion;
- the reservation status and bias for each bioregion;
- the major conservation threats for each bioregion;
- the most appropriate conservation management options for conserving biodiversity for each bioregion.
- Identify and comment on gaps in data and information on conservation values, reservation status and bias, major conservation threats and conservation management options for each bioregion and define the priorities and the resources required to redress these deficiencies.
- Provide a preliminary assessment and list of priorities within each bioregion, of those areas which may have potential as sites for reserves or other conservation management, and where further investigation or surveys are required.
